58.41$
lightjet print on Kodak metallic paper 24"x36" For the exhibition "Au" at RedLine in Denver I was given a 1.4 ounces of gold and instructed to create a piece of artwork from this gold. A trail of e-mails, chat logs, bank statements and PayPal account transactions are presented as evidence of the value of gold traveling from Denver to Berlin, where I was temporarily living. Reflecting on this monetary journey I considered the largely immaterial presence of currency in society. The print serves as a vehicle for the original value of the gold to inhabit, as the cost of the printing was roughly the value of the gold bar. This 1:1 translation of value from gold to a photographic print contrasts the complex structure of our current financial system that generates wealth from debt, and stock trading via artificial intelligence over fractions of a second. To this day I have yet to see the gold bar or the print in person, leaving me questioning their material existence and the value of labor. |
